About SANE/SART

SANE SART was founded in 1988 to provide physical exams of children in cases of suspected child assaults. This need was not met by any other organization in Napa or Solano Counties. Our services have grown to cover forensic legal exams of sexual assault victims of all ages through the Courage Center. We are still the only provider of these essential services in Napa, Sonoma, Mendocino, Marin and Solano Counties. Each year, SANE SART provides over 150 medical-legal examinations.

Through SANE SART, Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners are trained to use the most current technology, including digital photography, in performing examination on both victims and suspects. They consult regularly with nationally-renowned expert sexual assault nurses and physicians. They also participate in national professional development programs.

Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners testify in court regarding their collection of medical-legal evidence to assist the judicial process. Confidentiality of each case is strictly maintained. All services are provided free of charge to sexual assault victims, regardless of age or gender. Lisa Lewis-Javar is the Executive Director of Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners/Sexual Assault Response Team.

SANE SART’s cadre of 5 nurses are trained to use state-of-the-art medical technology, including digital coloposcope and photography, in examining both victims and suspects. These nurses also are skilled and compassionate listeners, which allows them to support victims at a vulnerable time. This trusting relationship enables SANEs to elicit valuable information that, along with the evidence collected during the exam, is essential for suspect identification and conviction. SANE SART nurses each work a 24-hour shift.

All services are provided at no charge to the victim.
